Preface: A Journey Through

A still life of starting a company

A still life of starting a company

Hey guys, Lisa here. As I thought about what kind of thoughts and updates I wanted to share with you, our earliest, most cherished customers and supporters, I figured it made sense to write about many things. Spice. Recipes. Packaging. Sustainability. But each time I started to write, I kept drifting back to a kind of general narrative about starting a company. A commitment to the process has been the one consistent thread running through each disparate thing that had to come together. And full disclosure, it’s been a messy, invigorating, terrifying, and joyful process.

Throughout it all, through has become an important word to me. The gap between the idea for Occo and launch required peeling uncertainty away, petal by petal. Months (ok, years) passed in which I spent long hours researching weird topics, going to random trade shows, and calling people up and asking questions that made me feel, at times, like God’s own idiot. It was an education and through became the mantra. The purpose wasn’t to be perfect or comfortable or even (I’ll get into this more later) dignified, the purpose was to not stop going through.

So that’s what these short chapters are about: going through and getting through. I hope that this testimony can serve as an example that – and I mean this in no way as a slight to myself or Occo – literally anyone can get through if you just keep going.
